Introduction
Situated on the World Heritage Site “Jurassic Coast”, the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre can offer a wide range of opportunities for the study of geology, geomorphology and palaeontology. Field trips can be catered to Key Stage 3, GCSE and A level groups.
Learning opportunities
Detailed below are brief outlines of the core learning sessions that we currently offer at the Centre. We understand that in order to gain as much as possible from a day visit, you may wish to combine different aspects of study. The Warden team are happy to discuss how we at the Centre can best meet the needs of your school or group.
All sessions are fully risk assessed. All sessions must be booked with the Warden Team in advance as they are dependent on the tides.
Charges
Visits to the Centre itself are free of charge, but you must book your visit in advance as the Centre is busy with organised trips all year round.
Organised tours £3.75 per student (no charge for staff)
Minimum booking fee £50.00
Geology and Geomorphology Tour

Duration 2 hours
After a short introduction and film show, the Warden will lead the group out onto the beach and along the coast stopping at certain points to discuss how the local cliffs and coastline have formed. The walk will cover the local geology, the landslide systems of West Dorset, an analysis of the composition of the beach and local conservation policy.

Fossil and Palaeontology Tour
Secondary Schools
Duration 2 hours
The tour starts in the Centre with a short film and warden talk on the fossils of Charmouth and the Jurassic environment in which they were formed. The warden will then lead the group out onto Charmouth beach to search for fossils. At the end of the session the tour covers the Fossil Collecting Code and aspects of conservation associated with the site. All finds may be taken back to school / college.
