Brittle-stars

Meaning of name – These creatures are shaped like stars and have very brittle arms.
Group – Ophiuroidea, Echinoderms
Age – Lower Jurassic, around 185 million years old.

Brittle-stars have five long arms which are connected to a central disc. This group of animals is still alive today and look very similar to their fossil ancestors. These fossils are only found to the east of Charmouth, around Eype.

Brittle-star This is an individual brittle-star fossil showing the five long brittle legs. It takes many hours for experts to prepare these fantastic fossils.
