Fossil Code: Category Two

Specimens are classified as Category 2 if they are one or more of the following;

Partial or complete vertebrates (animals with backbones)
Individual bones are fairly common on the beach, but when many of the bones are still articulated the specimen maybe recorded.

Very rare fossils
Although ammonites are common here, some species are very scarce. Also large and mature ammonites maybe recorded especially if we can work out which rock layer they originated from. Remains of fossil insects, some plants, crustaceans and cuttlefish are also scarce and are recorded.

Any collectors who have found fossils along the West Dorset coast, which fall into the following categories are encouraged to report and record their finds. Please contact the Centre if you have any questions about the code or if you would like to report a fossil.

This ammonite has been recorded because it is a large mature specimen. We know this is an adult as it has a large thin extension of the shell known as a rostrum. This specimen was collected by David Sole and prepared by Andy Cowap. Scale = 10mm. David Sole ©.
