Charmouth Dinosaur Weekend
Latest
Build your own dinosaur!
We were very lucky to have Darrell Wakelam, the local artist join us for a whole weekend where we made our own Charmouth Dinosaur. As you can see from the pictures we all had lots fun and the our Scelidosaur looks great!
The finished Scelidosaur will be going on display in the Centre in the New Year.
We would like to thank The Curry Fund, the O'Conner family and the Friends of The Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre for funding this weekend.
Phil's crinoids
Latest
This fantastic crinoid was found by our palaeontologist Phil Davidson on one of our Fossil Hunting Walks.
"It wasn't much to look at to start with as it was covered in hard grey limestone, but I noticed a few small stars at one end and immediately knew that it was a crinoid"
Alex Moore from The Forge Fossil Shop in Charmouth painstakingly prepared this fossil. It took over a month to expose the delicate arms from the hard limestone.
This crinoid is now on display in our 'Recent Finds' cabinet at the Centre. Click here for more information about crinoids
Joe's giant ammonite
Latest
What a find!
This is a picture of Joe Puxley holding up his giant fool's gold ammonite. He found it in the middle of the summer holidays on Stonebarrow beach with his mum. Although summer isn't the best time of year for fossil hunting, we have had a few rough seas and Joe was in the right place at the right time.
Well done, you made all the Wardens very jealous!
Fiann's Fossil Find
Latest
This amazing ichthyosaur skull was found by local collector Fiann Smithwick in July 2010. After a landslide on Stonebarrow beach he found several blocks of shale which had fossil bone sticking out of them. Fiann collected all the fragments he could find and took them to local fossil preparator Chris Moore at Forge Fossil Shop here in Charmouth. Chris reconstructed the skull from all the fragments and then prepared it revealing all the details of this fantastic find.
This specimen has been recorded for the Fossil Collecting Code. For more information about the code and to see other significant finds from the coast click here.
